CONCLUSION

The call for creative methods in research with children and young people has been answered in many research projects over the last 20 years of the “new” social study of childhood, and since data collection for this project took place. Simply employing creative or child-friendly methods does not, in and of itself, produce creative understandings. It is argued here that what is also required is creativity in the analysis and interpretation of data, no matter how collected. The research encounter is not only about “fun” or even about voice, as important as that has been to the development of theories in the “new” social study of childhood. Rather, the creative ways in which children and young people use the research encounter is a multi-layered response to context, which additionally demonstrates the creation of “other” spaces in and through their shared talk. In their response to context, children’s engagement with (or resistance to) the research process can be seen as bi-directional. Not only is the research having an effect on their experiences, but they are also having an effect on the research and on the experiences of the researcher. Employing Frankel’s (forthcoming) model clearly allows us to see the nature of children’s engagement with context (structure), and also allows the researcher to see the alternate set of meanings that are constructed in and through the research encounter. In the increasingly bounded and adult-controlled experience of being a child, the research setting becomes a space for agency.
